Research concentrations

My research focuses on nationalism, social identities and symbolic politics. In my understanding the latter is not just an addition to the "real" politics, but rather a discursive space used to negotiate power relations and a result of it an important tool of social control. In my PhD research I used this approach to examine power structures in the German Empire and Austria-Hungary, in another project I applied the same methodology to deconstruct contemporary religious nationalism in Poland. Furthermore, my focus on a local level allows to analyse how hegemonic discourses (e.g. nationalism) have been used by powerful individuals and groups to legitimise their own interests and aspirations in the public sphere.
