Research interests

Eva Riedke’s research and teaching draws inspiration from political anthropology, anthropology of the state, infrastructure studies, feminist and gender studies and Science and Technology Studies (STS). Her research has focused on forms of political participation, the relationship of culture and technology, infrastructures and their crises as well as human-environment relations.

She is currently beginning a new project focusing on micro-solar products, pursuing ethnographic research of so-called life lived ‘off the grid’ in Kenya. The project will follow the proposition that ‘thinking with grids’ offers an important avenue for interrogating and apprehending the contemporary state of ‘development’; renders tangible the multiple grids of power and knowledge within which people are connected, mapped, understood and made visible; provides new insights into politics of connection and disconnection; and allows us to shed new light on forms of post-colonial politics – including struggles for recognition, claims to citizenship, and political imaginaries.

Regional focus:

  • Southern Africa, particularly South Africa, and East Africa

Empirical research:

  • 2 months field research in Cape Town, South Africa (2011)
  • 13 months field research in Durban, South Africa (2011-2013)

Function within the Center
